A Formula For Happiness – If There Can Be Such A Thing!

June 18 or the third Friday of every June is supposed to be the happiest day of the year, if indeed such a generalization can ever be made.

According to a mathematical formula for happiness compounded by Dr Cliff Arnall of Cardiff, it is a combination of factors such as childhood memories of summer, blooming flowers and anticipation of taking a holiday that contribute to making us feel the happiest at this time of the year.

The actual formula is O + (N x S) + Cpm/T + He and works out like this:

  • The value of being outdoors (O), plus
  • Nature (N) Multiplied by
  • Social interaction (S) added to
  • Childhood summer memories, divided by
  • The warmth of summer temperatures plus
  • The excitement of anticipating a holiday

And presto! You have the formula for happiness! And all these factors are best suited to converge sometime in the middle of June, more precisely on the third Friday of June each year which come together to create the peak of happiness.

Dr. Arnall also offers some salutary advice when he tells us to concentrate more on happiness rather than material gain. Rather than ask how much do you earn, ask how happy you are.

“The best piece of advice I can give is work less and spend more time with people you love. That will make you happiest,” he says!
