Self Help for Bipolar Disorder – Tips and Strategies

1. Own your condition and educate yourself

One of the first steps towards self help for bipolar disorder is to accept that you have a problem and that something needs doing.

2. Manage your condition

Once you acknowledge the need for help; get that help for yourself. Know that in order to reclaim your life and be happy once again, you need to commit to recovery and do all that you need to do to get there.

3. Set routines and follow them

The symptoms of bipolar disorder are erratic and unpredictable behavior; even dangerous behavior. So self help for bipolar disorder should include setting routines and sticking to schedules.

Try and get to bed on time and wake up on time, have meals regularly, don’t let your work overshadow your social life or vice versa. Try to get balance into your life.

4. Take your meds

Meds are effective in controlling your mood swings and can help to calm you in a way that you have better control over your behavior. Don’t ignore the meds and don’t alter dosage or self medicate.

5. Pass on the alcohol

Alcohol, stimulants and recreational drugs tend to bring out the worst in a person with bipolar. Theintoxication can instigate even more reckless and dangerous behavior and could make the mood swings or aggression worse. So on social occasions pass on the alcohol or avoid those situations.

6. Sleep well

Self help for bipolar disorder has to include a restful 7 to 8 hours of sleep at night. This will stabilize your moods and help in recovery.

7. Recognize and avoid triggers

There may be people, circumstances or occurrence that act as triggers for you. Identify them. Then try and avoid them. If this is not possible, try and develop effective coping mechanisms.

8. Accept help

Accepting help is also a part of self help for bipolar disorder. People who love you and close to you want to help and letting them help can assist in your recovery.
