Most people start their life feeling content with what they currently have. A small family, a house to live in and a job that earns an amount required to pay off the monthly bills of the family is what one hopes for maximum. As years proceed and children grow older, you realize that what you have then is not adequate for a standard living and start thinking, ‘I should have worked harder and earned more.’ This is the point where one has to understand that he was just complacent and not truly content with what he actually had.
Set the Standard
Until the point when people recognize that they have fell short of the requirement, they were purposefully making themselves believe that what they have is more than enough forever. Complacency makes us deceptively feel content with what we have achieved, restraining ourselves from maximum utilization of our inherent potential.
In order to realize what your real capability is, predominantly set your ambition high and strive for it. The celebrated artist Michelangelo once said, “The danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.”
Identify the Reasons
Apparently, there are several reasons why one falls into a state of complacency. Reluctance to change the existing condition and the lack of courage to face challenging situations takes the forefront in the list. This is applicable in all the undertakings in life. If Jeff Bezos had not proceeded with his start-up idea of founding Amazon, being hesitant to quit his previous high paid job there would not have been such a change as found in today’s online marketing and he would not have enjoyed his success.
If you wish to have a well-maintained physique and a healthy body, you are required to change your existing routine that calls for regular exercises and a healthy diet. Similarly, when you wish to have a hike in your salary, possibility arises to change your existing office and take transfer to another place far away from your hometown. In both cases, you can convince yourself that what I have now is sufficient and plenty. However unfortunately, you are surely not content with what you have but entering into a state of complacency.
Become Aware of your Needs
Ask yourself whether you are happy with the present situation you are in or think is this the right place you are supposed to be? If the answer is a bold ‘yes’ and ‘I absolutely love being so,’ you can consider it as you are fully content. On the other hand, if it is just an ‘Okay’ and ‘I could have been better,’ remember you are complacent. Identify what your need is and strive for it instead of being satisfied with what you have. It is your attitude towards your goal that counts.
Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding presidents of United States said, “Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.”
