Managers motivating employees is a vital cog in the wheel of successful businesses. Motivation of employees means higher productivity, a more convivial work atmosphere, and happier employees.
However, getting people to do what you want them to as a manager is about more than simply telling them what you need done.
The importance of managers motivating employees
The key to performance improvement in any sphere is motivation. If you are motivated to do something you will do it quicker, more efficiently and seemingly with lesser effort.
Motivation also helps foster the intrinsic need that so many employees have – of growth, achievement and ultimately success.
Overall organizational goals or more specific aims such as meeting sales targets, improving profits can also be met better with a motivated workforce.
Understand what motivates employees
Not only are different individuals motivated in different ways, the different levels of the organization may also have varied reasons to feel motivated.
Supervisory positions, financial rewards, perks, awards or recognition, are some examples ofmanagers motivating employees after finding out what motivates each individual employee.
Whereas a less ambitious person may feel motivated simply with the assurance of job security a more ambitious person may need to feel that there is scope for advancement.
Use Performance based rewards
When perks and awards are merit and performance linked, this will obviously spur employees on to give that little extra to the organization. Set work related goals, restructure jobs in a way that fits employee profiles better, and set project based as well as overall reward systems.
This is a way to positively reinforce hard work, initiative and creativity. It also helps to foster a healthy competition among employees within the organization; which is another way in which managers motivating employees can work effectively.
Create an atmosphere where the employee feels like a valuable member of the team. Also look at satisfying employee needs – improving health insurance, looking after childcare needs, paid vacation time, flexi-hours, tele-commuting options and so on can create feelings of wellbeing and job satisfaction.
Also offer a measure of autonomy and take suggestions and implement them to make employees feel empowered.
Have an open door policy
Let your employees feel as if they have your ear on matters of importance. Managers and supervisors need to keep the channels of communication open so that employees feel free to approach with genuine grievances. Being approachable and receptive to communications is another way for managers motivating employees.
