The rates of marriage in society is declining, however the incidence of “Work Spouses†is actually on the rise. According to a Canadian survey, 69% married men, 63% married women and 55% of unmarried individuals have had relationships with a co-worker that is tantamount to a ‘Work Spouse.’
The relationship with a work spouse could be among the most intimate and intense connections that a person may have in his/her entire life. This is not to say that the relationship has to be necessarily sexual.
In fact only between 8 and 12% of those who participated in the survey said that their relationship with their work spouses was sexual.
However 24% of those surveyed said that they stay in touch with their work spouses over the weekends and in the non work hours in the evenings and so on.
Part of the reason for the formation of these work based relationships is that they fill in for family or friends who may be far away or nonexistent.
Further, it is the propinquity of working closely for long hours on a day-to-day basis that causes people to become intimate with each other; more so than at home where domestic chores and children can interrupt conversation time.
