Alcohol and drug addiction and the two most dangerous addictions that the US is facing currently. It is shocking to know that more than half of all Americans aged 12 and above consumes alcohol and out of this, more than 25% are into binge drinking. About 30 million are into using recreational drugs and prescription medications.

At present, there are about 750000 heroin users in the Unites States whereas almost 2.5 % of the people living in the United States have used cocaine at least once in their life. Baltimore, Maryland has more per ca pita individuals with Heroin addiction than any other U.S. state. What is alarming is that almost one in 20 high school seniors in U.S have tried methamphetamine’s at least once. Another shocking fact is that 2.1 million of thee teenagers in United States abuse prescription drugs and 11.6% of youths have used tobacco products. In fact 49.9% of youths said that getting their hands on marijuana was very easy.

Some of the celebrities who have died due to drug overdose are Lenny Bruce, Judy Garland, Chris Farley, Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix. Some common drugs include Depressants, which lower the functioning of the central nervous system, Anti depressants, are supposed to treat depression and mood disorders, Alcohol, a depressant which might lead to alcohol dependency, steroids, used to reduce inflammation in the body, tobacco, contains highly addictive stimulant and barbiturates, used in sedation and anesthesia to depress the nervous system. Drugs are classified into 6 categories: narcotics, anabolism steroids, hallucinogens, inhalants, stimulants and cannabis.
